A large David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896 - 1974) collection is on display in the middle gallery of Jose Vera Fine Art & Antiques. Siqueiros is known as one of Mexicos three greats, along with Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco. Born in Chihuahua and trained at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Siqueiros was a political activist as well as an artist. His exterior frescoes (or murals) focused on dynamic revolutionary themes to inspire the lower classes. His bold and vivid paintings depicted the struggle against fascism and other progressive themes. In the final decade of his life, Siqueiros set up a workshop in Cuernavaca and painted his most ambitious work, a huge mural called "The March of Humanity." Siqueiros' 1932 mural, La America Tropical, painted in the historical heart of the Mexican community in Downtown Los Angeles, is currently undergoing restoration thanks to funding and professional assistance from the Getty Museum. Siqueiros painted another mural at Chouinard Art School in Pasadena with the assistance of Millard Sheets that was subsequently destroyed. The Siqueiros exhibit at José Vera Fine Art and Antiques features approximately forty of Siqueiross originals. |
